FAQs

To book an appointment, please call the Nepean Sports Medicine & Physiotherapy Centre at 613-727-5755 or email info@nepeansportsmedicine.ca. You can also contact me directly to book an appointment.

Are Registered Dietitians covered by OHIP or insurance plans?

Registered Dietitians are not covered by OHIP but your insurer may provide covereage. Check under “Extended Benefits” to find out if your employer provides coverage for Registered Dietitians. If you don’t have coverage, reach out to your HR representative to request that Registered Dietitian services be covered. You may present them with the following fact sheet: Dietitian Services are Cost Effective.

What is the difference between a Registered Dietitian and a Nutritionist?

The titles “dietitian” or “Registered Dietitian” are protected by law; only someone who has met specific educational and professional requirements is legally allowed to use these titles. All Registered Dietitians in Ontario are members of the College of Dietitians of Ontario (every province has its own college). As a member of the college, a Registered Dietitian must practice according to set standards and laws that protect the public. The terms “nutritionist” or “registered nutritionist” are not protected terms in Ontario. This means that anybody can call themselves a nutritionist and there are no standards for their quality of care.

What payment methods are accepted?

Payment in full is due upon delivery of service. The Nepean Sports Medicine & Phsyiotherapy Centre accepts cash, cheque, credit, and debit. Packages must be paid in full at the time of purchase. Receipts can be issued in full following purchase or divided over the period of service delivery. E-transfer is currently the only accepted method of payment for nutrition services delivered through email, phone, or Skype.

Do I need to bring anything to my appointment?

Please download and bring the signed Consent Form and completed Nutrition Intake Form to your initial appointment. These forms help me to obtain a complete medical history and form the basis of my recommendations. When completing the 3 day food record, please include as much detail as possible, including what you ate, how much you ate, where you ate, and what time you ate.

Do I need a doctor’s referral to see you?

Some insurance plans require a doctor’s referral to see a Registered Dietitian, please check with your insurance provider. If you do not have insurance, you do not need a referral.

Where are you located?

Susan Macfarlane Nutrition is located in the Nepean Sports Medicine & Physiotherapy Centre, which is attached to the Nepean Sportsplex at 1701 Woodroffe Ave. in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Free parking is available.

What if I need to cancel my appointment?

Advanced notice of 24 hours is required for all appointment cancellations. If an appointment is cancelled with less than 24 hours notice, a cancellation fee of $40 will be charged.

How many appointments will I need?

The number of appointments you need depends on yourpresenting nutrition concerns, your health status, motivation, and confidence. If you are interested in meeting with me to ensure your diet is nutritionally adequate, 1-2 appointments will usually suffice. Chronic health conditions, including obesity, eating disorders, type 2 diabetes, and IBS require more frequent appointments. Nutrition packages are recommended for these conditions.

How old do I need to be to see a Registered Dietitian?

I am qualified to see individuals of all ages. If you are underage (less than 18 years) and would like to meet with me alone, you must be able to provide informed consent, which means that you are capable of understanding the following:

  • What the nutrition treatment is
  • Who will be performing the nutrition treatment
  • Why the nutrition treatment is important
  • Alternatives to the nutrition treatment
  • Risks and side-effects of the nutrition treatment and alternatives
  • Outcomes of not having the nutrition treatment

Please note that I reserve the right to determine an individual’s ability to provide informed consent.

Live outside of Ottawa? No problem!

I’m happy to work with you electronically through email, Skype, and phone.*
